Fall and Rise of Exeter

Introduction

I plan on adding a summary of the events of each session below. It will take the form of a story, describing the action and events without much mention of details or game mechanics.

This will be told from the perspective of the players, thus many things will seem unfinished or unexplained (it is after all a currently running saga).

Footnote - I'm not one for detailed research, I never have the time... thus some of the: place names, times, locations, geographic distances, travel times, mentions of lords, lands and titles will be wrong. If this annoys you, please don't complain to me about it.

If the players split up, I'll add subheadings to make it clearer. Especially if time passes differently, reading down the page will give you the story as it was played out (this includes moments where one group get a day ahead of the other, just so the puzzle isn't ruined for them [cf the forest]).

The Saga

Map

This wasn't available to the players in the first few sessions, they found it in the Bristol Covenants Library.

Prologue (31.1.2008) [NavTop]

In the Winter of 1262, Mathias Hobson prepares for a long journey with his master Amadeus Thorn from their covenant in York to Bristol, far in the south. Only a few months after his Gauntlet, this long journey seems unusual, but he is bound to follow his master for a little bit longer, but the reason for the journey has not been passed to him.

The journey begins at the first signs of Spring. Making haste, the expedition sets off with nearly thirty grogs, a large part of the covenant's staff. It takes almost a month to travel the length of the country, and finally in the Summer of 1262 they arrive at the Grand (Autumn) Covenant of Bristol.

Charles-Villios sits in his lab, a newly fitted room after completing his Gauntlet just this Winter. Accepted by House Merinita, his unique talents seeming unwelcome in his home covenant. Charles' master, Godfrey, seems intend on keeping him out of sight at the moment, he doesn't know why.

James Optus, the only apprentice to the great Berengar wanders the passages of the Bristol Covenant. Berengar seems withdrawn of late, the entire Winter was spent locked in his laboratory. With his master absent, Optus has been the focus of attention, the only person Berengar thought worthy to take as an apprentice, what was special about him.

The Arrival at Bristol (31.1.2008) [NavTop]

Mathias has never seen any covenant other than York, the size of Bristol is a wonder to behold. Once inside, the travellers are sent to rest, the journey has ended.

By the evening, Thorn has gone into a private meeting with Berengar with instructions to Mathias that he is not to be disturbed. Without much to do, he wanders the covenant and happens upon a reading room where two young magi sit, they (of course) Optus and Charles.

They spend the evening discussing the bizarre sequence of events, Optus too has been told not to disturb his parens. Though none of them are sure what is going on, it is clear that the older magi are involved in some serious discussions. Though, without some serious breach of the code, a fact that Optus need remind Mathias, there is no way to know what is happening within the North Chamber. Mathias attempts to ask the serving girl, but she will not discuss such things with an outsider. Eventually, they retire for the evening.

A new day begins, and still Berengar and Thorn are locked away in the North Chamber. A week goes by, then another. The three magi are all beginning to feel like outsiders in the Covenant. Mathias is quick to suggest leaving, even setting up on his own away from all this and away from his master. Charles is also feeling excluded, and agrees to a potential move. Optus is harder to convince, but he knows of the vast lands to the west that have no covenant, and it would be a great deed to found a new covenant in the uncharted and wild lands.

Charles has heard rumour of something in the southern reaches of the covenant lands. He is desperate to go and investigate, especially as the rumours concern fairies. Godfrey has asked him to stay out of the way, he is tending to the discussion in the Chamber, and will only say that there are some matters that concern the faerie - and it would be better to stay in his laboratory. At mention of a trip around the covenant lands, Godfrey eagerly agrees and arranges for a small guard to accompany them. He mentions in passing that Amadeus Thron was once resident in the Bristol Covenant, and that he and Berengar lived here nearly a century ago.

A day later, a small expedition is formed. Charles invites Mathias, who has lingered restlessly in the covenant, to accompany him and together they convince Optus to join them. With a cook and maid, eight soldiers and Godfrey's Man at Arms, William, the group set off for the south.

Passing through a wood, near the southern reaches of the covenant lands, the three magi are surprised to note a large number of squirrels seem to be following them. Charles senses the wood to have a slight connection to the faerie, but attempts to penetrate the minds of the little creatures reveal only thoughts of nuts, large nuts, but nothing more.

Clearing the forest, they come upon a small village, Optus enters with William and they are met by the local Priest of an overly large church. He welcomes them to Redhill as representatives of the land owners, the Bristol Covenant. Unsure why they have come for the harvest so early in the year, Optus makes it clear they are simply touring the lands of the covenant. The group make camp at the edge of the village and the three magi return to speak to the Priest the following day, Optus and Charles attend mass while Mathias joins them afterwards.

Upon entering the church, all three magi immediately feel the weight of the Divine upon them; it is overly oppressive even for a church. The Priest invites them into his side rooms to discuss their tour. He mentions that only a week past Edmund Ironside, the Steward of Bristol, had passed this way and stopped at the Beacon of the West to pray before travelling into the untamed and wild west.

Redhill, The Beacon Of The West (7.2.2008) [NavTop]

The Steward granted the Bristol Covenant right to the lands around Bristol, to manage and control, paying dues and services to his lordship. The Priest has been here for nearly thirty years, but a long time ago this village was under the charge of another group of magi from the Atrum Silva Covenant, the Exeter Covenant. Charles and Optus have never heard of another covenant in this part of england. In fact, it is a known fact that Bristol is the most westward covenant in the south as the lands to the west are unsafe. Mathias knows nothing of this area, but does enquire why this church is called the Beacon of the West, simply it is the last Church if you travel west until you reach the sea.

The Priest and his predecessors maintain a diary, more an account of the village and the area, which may contain more information, but he will not let them read it, the contents are meant for men of the church only. While he is out of the room, the three magi take note of the room. Their is a large bookcase, full of more books that you would expect to see in a small village church. The priest returns, sadly he knows only that the lands were transfered long ago to the Bristol covenant, no explanation is given in the diaries.

Optus asks if they may look at the bookcase, which they may, but none of the books may leave the church. There is a collection of books on the history of the village, mainly harvest quotas. Among the books, there is an old poorly kept book in a peculiar form of lain. The inside cover reads, 'transcribed by Albert the Lame, 1148 for the Exeter Library', it describes a ritual, but Optus can only make out the name, 'Slumber of the Faithful'.

The three leave Redhill, promising to return on their tour, and head south into the woods. Based on Charles rumours, they happen across something of interest. A small pool of water in a clearing. While the three magi ponder what to do, it is definitely magical or faerie, several of their grogs wander near the pool... suddenly one disappears. A panic takes hold of the group, eventually they calm down to find the missing grog in the pool, he is drowned.

Optus attempts to lift the body out of the water, but his magic is affected by the aura and manages to pull the dead soldiers arm off. He then sends two of the grogs to fish the body out instead. Before Charles or Mathias can stop them, the two soldiers are sucked under the water and they cannot seem to get out. Mathias quickly creates a pocket of air around the two, but one panics and drowns in front of the shocked magi. Charles and Optus consider what to do, Mathias is locked in concentration to maintain the remaining grogs air.

Optus notices a deer drinking from the over side of the pool, it seems to be unaffected. So he orders two grogs to subdue the deer, which they then dip into the pool for the stuck soldier to grab on to and they pull him out.

With the inconvenience over, the three magi consider how to collect some of this magic water. Several attempts to collect the water fail, until Mathias realises the water is enchanted against anything not from this wood. A small container is formed from a nearby tree and an amount of water is collected.

The group return to Bristol, not stopping at Redhill. Charles feels a dark cloud over the covenant as they arrive. Godfrey meets them to say that Berengar is dead and Thorn is missing. They headed off into the west with fifty men a day after the tour began. Something attacked them during the night and Berengar was killed outright, Thorn had vanished, but the commanding soldier gathered his surviving men and bought the body back to Bristol. All are in shock, especially Optus. Mathias feels even more lost in this strange land.

On a full moon, the new head of the Covenant is chosen, now Berengar is dead. Richard the Gentle is appointed the new Primus.

Mathias is keen to head west and search for his master, but Godfrey insists upon patience. Matters need to be attended to, but Optus and Charles help to form support for a search party. Sadly they can gather no real support. Mathias is given temporary charge of the men from York and his masters possessions. Given these men, the three decide to head out west.

Optus locates a single book in the Bristol Library, 'The Magical History of the Untamed West' by Siguard the Crusader dated 1051. It details a host of magical beasts and demons that lived in the woods. The North coast contains many fishing villages, plagued by sea demons. The South coast is full of pirates and smugglers, the little villages and towns they inhabit are dens of sin and vice. All manner of evil goes on there. The interior is full of dark woods and unspeakable horrors, ungodly rituals and strange stone monoliths and circles. The West is indeed a wild place.

The Expedition West (14.2.2008) [NavTop]

In the summer of 1262, Mathias, Charles and Optus along with the group from York set off west in search of Amadeus Thorn and secretly, a place to set up a new covenant.

Berengar's cheif scribe, Riley has spent the last few weeks sorting his old masters things. With the last of the books set safely in the covenant library there is nothing left for him to do. He owed much to his master, and feels obliged to continue in the service of his only apprentice, Optus. He asks permission to join the expedition west, hoping his new master will be a worthy legacy.

Mathias has been given charge of 25 soldiers and 10 staff as well as Thorn's personal vis (5 pawns of Terram and 5 pawns of Animal). Optus has been granted his dead masters vis, minus the needs of the covenant (4 Creo, 4 Rego, 2 Ignem). Godfrey pulled Charles aside on the morning of their departure, he handed him a small pendant, with a dull blue stone at its heart, saying it will bring protection.

The reports of the returned soldiers mention that they stopped off in a small village on the north coast, Dunster, before heading towards the site of the old Exeter Covenant, but they were attacked before they reached it. The men saw arrows of flame, but could provide no better description, or any idea who had attacked them.

The group set off for Dunster with three weeks supply and the hope of finding Thorn. Mathias may not get on with his parens, but he owes him much and must attempt to find him. He orders his Sergeant, Harald, to prepare to depart, while Godfrey and William bid them good luck.

After three days travel, the group come upon Dunster, a small fishing village on the north coast of Somerset. It has been a quick journey, and Mathias is eager to learn news of his parens. Charles, Optus and Riley approach the village, but find only a dangerous path down a cliff to Dunster, it seeming the normal way to approach is by sea. Mathias and several of the men scout the forest to the south of the village looking for somewhere to camp.

Charles is the only one who spots a second path down the cliff, but this is no ordinary path. It leads off into the sky, but he cannot be sure where. Optus and Riley make their way down the cliff, with a few soldier grogs in tow.

They reach the village around noon and find it strangely silent, they spot worried eyes looking at them from behind the windows. The fishing boats have all been pulled out the water and far up on to the land. A worried man beckons them to enter a large building. Inside, they are a greeted by the sight of nearly the whole village huddled together with worried expressions.

Instantly, an old man, the wise man of the village recognises Optus for what he is. In league with the devil, evil and untrust worthy. The head of the village disregards the old mans words and offers the new arrivals to stay with them for it is far too dangerous outside until unset. Naturally, Optus and Riley are curious as to why, but first Riley asks after his master - since they passed this way. The reaction is not good, they suspect them of being evil beings come to plague them with more torments, as if this current curse was not enough. The head of the village explains, the once every seven years on this day strange things wander the village. The sea is filled with monsters that are usually not seen except far out at sea. For this single day, the village will usually loose a person or two. It is the curse placed on Dunster.

Charles has been sat high upon the cliff, and has been carefully watching the village below. After much searching, flying in hawk form over the forest, Mathias has located a suitable camp and has instructed what remains of the convoy to make camp. He joins Charles on the cliff and is guided down the cliff.

Mathias is not so subtle in his approach, walking straight in, causing all the villagers to become agitated. Unfortunately, none of the group can see Mathias outside, only the head of the village looks out and declares there is a demon walking around. They quickly barricade the door and some of the women and children begin to cry.

Mathias walks up to the building and knocks on the door, calling out to Optus. Everyone inside stops to stare at the new comers, the old man begins to rant at them and even the head of the village is unsre he can trust them now. They said they were travellers, but this strange new comer is known to them. Riley orders the few soldiers he has there to keep their weapons away, and announces they will leave, much to the relief of all the villagers.

Optus, Mathias, Riley and the five soldiers are now outside, standing in the village. Optus begins to ask Mathias why he has entered the village, his Gift an obvious cause of alarm for these simple folk... when suddenly they both feel something attempt to affect their param. Suddenly, Riley and the five men fly up into the sky and disappear in a silver flash twenty yards up.

Charles, looking down into the cove, sees the grogs lift up into the sky and the silver flash illuminate an exact mirror of the village below floating in the air. The second path down the cliff clearly leads into this copy.

Mathias and Optus quickly climb the cliff and Charles meets them where the second path begins - they agree to enter this silver village and Charles leads them along the path only he can see.

Riley and the men appear in the centre of a market, but it is no ordinary market. Creatures of unknown shape and form walk around, but Riley is sure they are faerie. There is music playing all around and all the buildings are bright and vibrant colours.

Shortly after, the three magi walk towards this same place, hearing the music, seeing the bright colour and smelling something too sweet to be real. Charles, suddenly spots the grogs walking out the town... but they walk towards the edge, a fall back towards the true ground far below. Mathias is able to reach them in time, he is to stay with the grogs and protect them in this place. Charles is keen, perhaps too keen, to investigate the market. Optus insists he accompanys him and Riley asks to join, merely to observe.

They walk around the market, viewing many weird and wonderfall stalls. They meet to Badger, whose stall is empty to Optus' eye; but he is offered the finest pottery yet to be made, for only a lock of your hair. A beautiful faerie invites them to see his stall away from the hussle, Charles declines and leads the others away. Riley bumps into a horse, who turns and begins to pitch is goods - the finest steeds in the land, his own offspring. While explaining he needs no horse, Charles sweeps him away to find Optus talking to a tree, whose table is full of many glass orbs. Despite his desire to obtain one, Optus has nothing he wishes to trade with the tree, and none of it's offers sit well with his conscious or personal desires.

On the edge of the village, Mathias sees the sky darkening, and begins to worry for his sodales. They finally emerge and they all make their way back up the cliff. As the sun sets, the silver village shines and fades away, not to be seen for another seven years.

Charles and Optus are determined to return, while no one else is sure they wish to return here, for any reason. The expedition sets off, moving towards its destination, the old Exeter Covenant, located far from the town of Exeter, now a place of ill repute and murder.

The expedition heads south west, away from the relative safety of the northern coast line and into the centre of Devon, towards the Exeter Covenant. After many days travel they draw within sight of South Molton, but are greeted with the view of an army at camp. A lone rider and his standard bearer ride out to meet the expedition (a group of thirty armed men). He flies the colours of Steward Ironside. The Steward stops at a distance and waits for representatives of this unknown force, Optus and Riley make their way forward, with Charles and Mathias closely following.

Ironside immediately recognises Optus for what he is, a magus, dressed in his robes and the air by which he carries himself. They talk, and Optus manages to not offend the Lord of all the South West. Ironside explains that he is leading an army against the smugglers and pirates on the south coast, attacking their ports and burning their supplies. He has just returned from Bigbury Bay, a successful attack, and now will head back south after resupplying. He will march to Okehampton, to the south of here round the Exeter Wood.

Ironside ponders for a moment, then asks if Riley is a scribe, to which he takes out his parchment. Ironside proclaims that, if the magi can reach Okehampton before him by way of the forest, he will grant them stewardship of all the land from Okehampton to the northern coast of Devon, from Bideford in the west to the limits of the Bristol Covenant in the East, a truely vast area of land.

Ironside rides off to join his troops. It will take him nearly eight days march to go around the woods. His only comment, that the they must cross the untraversable wood. With time at their heels, the expedition begin immediately into the wood. They know the Exeter Covenant lies somewhere within, and that in all likelihood the strange tales of these woods are artifacts of the old covenant.

The whole expedition follows a path into the woods, it quickly disappears, leaving them navigate south by other means. It was early morning when they entered the wood, and shortly after they come across a path, its direction perpendicular to their journey south. Upon examination no one finds anything magical, not even Charles, whose knowledge of the faerie and roads makes him suspicious.

Sometime after the group have broken for lunch, they spot a dark cloud move across the sky. It is a vast host of bats heading west. Mathias, after being talked into action by his sodales, takes hawk form and flies up to investigate. A large number of bats spot the bird and swoop down to investigate themselves, the majority return to the host, but three dive down to attack.

Mathias is too slow to return to the safety of the tree tops, two bats are upon him, sharpe metal claws fixed to their talons and painted masks cover their faces. Mathias is struck deeply, but manages to knock one bat out of the sky. Charles, seeing the danger on the ground, casts the Crystal Dart, completely tearing through the small bat. Finally, Mathias is able to concentrate to cast Gust of Wind (?) that blows the final attacker off into the distance.

On the ground, Mathias has his wound seen too and the bat he injured is found and bought to the magi. They bind its wings and remove the mask and claws. When it wakes Mathias attempts to read its thoughts, but only senses a deep hate for something, not the magi, but something this little creature wants to hurt. As is struggles, the magi are unsure what to do, finally ordering Riley to kill the bound animal.

The Forest of Exeter (21.2.2008) [NavTop]

The afternoon is uneventful, Harald expects the wood to be two days travel and only this small incident mars the first day. In the afternoon, the group come across another path, again perpendicular to their direction of travel. They cross it without consideration and continue travelling into the early evening. Finally, they make camp, secure in the hope of beating Ironside to Okehampton.

Mathias waits up, long after the others sleep... he sits in a paranoid state watching the sky for bats and about the attack at night on his parens, but in his heightened state, he spots a most curious thing. Three squirrels, holding spears approach the camp. On making camp, Mathias had drawn a ward against magical animals around the camp. These squirrels approached the circle, and the first crossed it, followed by the other two, Mathias calls out to his sodales, which scares the squirrels away. As everyone awakens, there is nothing to see, Optus and Charles are left to wonder what state their sodalis is in.

The night passes, the watch sit guard. In the morning it discovered by Harald that animals have taken some of the food, but nothing too serious. Their second day in the forest begins, the group start a quick march. The reward for success was everything Mathias and Optus could have hoped for, they push on for success.

During the early morning, the vanguard, headed by Optus, comes across another path, again perpendicular to their travels. They pass over and continue on, breaking for lunch. They continue in the afternoon, and again come across a path.

Still only the second day of travel, none of the magi are too concerned. The paths they reason are a mere magical trick to lead you the wrong way. They ignore the path again, but decide to begin marking trees they pass with sword markes, and continue on to the evening where Riley ensures that the watch keep a closer eye on the food supplies.

The third day begins, but Mathias remains in his tent until the whole group is ready to leave. The injury from his tangle with the bats has yet to heal properly and they have been travelling non-stop for eight days (three to Dunster from Bristol, three from Dunster to the forest and two days within). The whole expedition looks more tired today, the quick pace of the last two days was perhaps not the best idea.

About mid morning, the vanguard find another path. The expedition comes to a halt as Mathias, Optus, Charles and Riley consider their situation. Their initial rush into the forest that was described to them as 'untraversable' may have been foolish. Harald expected, according to his map, to reach Okehampton late yesterday or early this morning. There is no sign of the village. Mathias, after a slight reluctance, takes to the sky to investigate their location from above. He is greeted by the sight of forest in every direction, with no end except the horizon.

Riley looks along the path, he first looks to the east. He enters a trance and begins to take a step forwards. Mathias shakes him, and his mind returns. Looking along the path, it seems to go on forever in a straight line, but there is something at the end, something that catches your eye and draws you to it. A great compulsion to walk forward, only stopped when Mathias shook him.

Ever the explorer, Riley looks west along the path. He is tranced again, too all who look at him, but he sees the infinite path stretch off to something he cannot quite make out; but now there is a compulsion to walk away, he feels drawn backwards and takes a step back. Mathias shakes him upon the first step.

The four are divide upon what to do. Charles and Optus are convinced the paths are traps, designed to get you lost. Riley and Mathias are sure they are magical, but are unsure they should ignore them completely. The forest seemed unending from the sky, only these paths seems to break the endless trees. None of the marks they left have been seen again.

They ignore the first path and continue on, breaking for lunch, then push further south in the afternoon. With utter exasperation, they come across another path. Riley again looks down, but this time looking west draws in him and east pushes him backwards.

Mathias has had enough, he intends to search along the path. He takes two shieldmen and archer and two swordmen along with him. Riley joins him, but Charles and Optus remain with the group; they will wait until evening for the party to return, no later.

The group of seven begin to walk along the path to the east, it is hard not too look along the path and yet walk it. After a short while, Riley and Mathias order a break and are horrified to discover the shieldman rearguard is missing. They decide to push on, the path must lead somewhere. Suddenly, the archer and swordman begin to take a step back, their vacant look means they are under the effect. The other swordman stops his commrade as he walks into him, but no one stops the archer. He takes a second step back, then a third, then he vanishings. The five remaining of the party quickly leave the path.

They reason it is time to return to the larger group, they have achieved nothing and two of the soldiers are gone. Keeping the path within sight, they head back west. They travel for nearly an hour, far longer than they thought they had been walking east - but they do not come across the expedition. Mathias flies high to search, but alas the tree coverage looks the same in all directions, he can see nothing.

The party continue west, with nothing left to do, but as night begins to fall they are left in a dire situation. Charles and Optus order the men to make camp slightly off the path. As night falls and the party do not return they are left with a diffucult decision in the morning.

The fourth day in the forest begins. Mathias, Riley and the three remaining grogs spent the night sleeping by the path, unprotected from the elements. They have no supplies and no equipment, so spend the day foraging for food; but Riley never lets the path out of his sight. Optus takes charge of the expedition, Harald is not immediately happy with the abandonment of his new master, but he was not happy about the unknown state of his real master, Amedaus Thorn. Eating breakfast by the path, the group set off south.

Optus and Charles (4th day in the forest)

The vanguard meet nothing unusual all morning, still not seeing any of their marks from the last three days, confident they are not going in circles. Once they break for lunch, Optus and Charles consider their surroundings. The forest should not be four days across, and Ironside will arrive at Okehampton in another four days. The men are beginning to sense something is not right with the journey, though only Harald is aware of the confusion on his masters faces.

In the afternoon, the vanguard come across another path. This is the final straw for Charles, who is finally sure that heading south will lead forever deeper into the forest.

They order all the men to tie rope between eachother, tethered to the cart. Optus looks west and steps forward in a trance, Charles stops him. Deciding this is bad, they order the expedition to walk east along the path, but not look along it. They travel until it is night, making camp slightly off the path. It is discovered two of the men have gone missing during the afternoon.

Optus and Charles (5th day in the forest)

Upon waking up, the camp near the path, Charles decides to simply follow the path. Nothing else seems to be helping.

The whole expedition stand on the path and look east (towards the rising sun - but none of them have worked this out). Everyone begins to look along the path, and one by one they fall into a trance, begin to take a step forward, then another, then another and vanish. Even the cart vanishes with the men who are pulling it. Only Charles is left, he is now alone in the forest, but he cannot seem to find the point on the infinite path, finally he sees it and begins to walk forward.

...

From the gloom of the forest, Optus steps out into a brighter light, they have walked out of the forest. However, in front of them is the town of South Molton. They have travelled for four days to arrive back where they started.

The expedition makes camp outside the town, and Optus heads into the town with Harald. They enter the local inn, the 'Masked Rat', where Optus begins to talk to the inn keeper. He mentions the forest, causing the inn keepers jolly expression to fade, he says either people come out of there funny in the head or not at all. If you want to ask anyone about the forest it would be old Ben, he goes in there often.

In the town, Harald finds the missing grogs from their expedition and more surprisingly some of the grogs that went off with Mathias and Riley. After a few questions is is clear they know nothing.

Riley and Mathias (4th day in the forest)

After a days foraging, the five men make camp by the path again, eating what meager food they could find and huddling for warmth. Mathias is too tired to cast any magic, having not slept properly last night and in fear of being lost in the forest forever, or at least until they starve.

It is now that Riley has a revelation, the paths seemed tied to the sun, specifically you are drawn to the sun. He steps on to the path after the sun has gone down.

Looking along the path, it is no longer infinite, in fact there is a large building clearly within sight, and there is no desire to walk along the path either forwards or backwards. Mathias shakes Riley, fearing the worst, but is delighted to hear the news. The two being to look down the path, but are shaken by the grogs. With nothing to lose, all five stand on the path and walk towards the building.

After a short walk, they come to a stone arch, made of three large stone blocks. The path passes through the arch, to either side is now dense forest, but it looks almost blurry to the eye. A grog goes through. He instantly begins to look around in a panic, Mathias is concerned but Riley realises they cannot hear him even though he is clearly shouting. The four step through.

They find themselves at the base of a hill, upon which is the ruin of an old castle. They've come through a stone arch, but they cannot see back along the road. Riley walks around the hill and finds another arch on the opposite side, it too seems to be an empty arch way. Mathias heads up the hill to look at the ruin, this is clearly the old Exeter Covenant. On reaching it, he notices the door and steps through.

To Riley, Mathias has gone, having stepped into a regiones. The forest seems to strech out forever again and he is left to stand with the three remaining grogs, wondering whether their situation has improved.

Mathias steps into a short corridor, it is lined with candles that illuminate the old stones. At the end is another door, he walks up, opens it and steps through.
